Research Paper - Lake Baikal in Russia

I became interested in the endangered lake Baikal in Russia after reading several articles and a book about it. Lake Baikal is located in the south of Siberia, near the Russian- Mongolian border. Lake Baikal is the biggest lake in the world and major resource to supply drinking water for Russia. In his book entitled °∞Lake Baikal Inspires Russian Clean-up Effort°±, Dobbs states that °∞Baikal is probably 25 million years old with sediments move than three miles deep°± (Dobbs, 1993, p31). In addition, about 80 percent of organism, 2,000 different plants and animals, exists only in Lake Baikal. According to Dobbs (1993), the problem is that Lake Baikal is getting polluted. A lot of plant and marine has suffered by effects of pollution. There are several reasons for this. Russian industry discharge lots of toxic waste. That is related to the economic profit of companies because if they do not install filters that can refine pollutants, they could save money. Another reason is that pipelines carrying oil from Russia to China and pipelines carrying the industrial waste have been leaking in Lake Baikal. Finally, lake Baikal is in serious trouble in Russia, and four things, strict laws, changing oil pipeline°Ø route, corporation with other countries, education programs and campaign, should be done to protect the lake Baikal in Russia.

One of the greatest reasons for pollution of Lake Baikal is that a lot of factories have discharged toxic waste. Especially, according to TES case studies, the paper and pulp mills that their business has began since 1954 have polluted the surrounding region. They produce bleached cellulose that is used in clothing manufacture. (TES case studies) This chemicals could threat the lake Baikal and kill many organisms that live in the there. However, these paper and pulp mills contribute to the local economy and employment. About 2,000 employees work at these factories so it is problem to connecting with dwellers°Ø life (TES case studies). In addition, air pollution surrounding Baikal is very serious. The larch and pine forests in the areas also show degradation effects from the pollution as DDT levels are getting high. Populations in the area are raising. As a result, more many industrial factories are getting build in there. So many industrial factories discharged pollutants (TES case studies).
The second reason is about a oil pipeline. Local NGOs and independent experts insist that it could be a threat to the local community and the ecosystem of Lake Baikal as oil and waste leak due to old equiopment(Shapkhaev, 2005). Furthermore, there are other plans to build this project in the area. °∞Just one significant accident would be enough to disturb the ecological balance in all of Lake Baikal (Shapkhaev, 2005).
To solve these problems, at first environmental regulation should be tight. That is, Russia government should give penalty from dump and discharging pollutions of oil. A great number of paper mills produce paper fibers, and wastewater of industrial and domestic. The major reason for pollution of Lake Baikal is caused by Russian°Øs unconscientious behavior. Paper mills also discharged for their economic profit. Greenpeace and Russia state should defend their behavior and should raise up a penalty about pollution that dirtied Lake Baikal in order to recovery it.
Second, the oil pipeline should be changed the route. As oil pipeline pass the Lake Baikal, some oil is leaking because of old equipment. Leaking oil and waste could pollute Lake Baikal and organisms that live in there. This problem is very serious and dangerous. It is best to change route of the pipeline but changing it is difficult because it is already lies and cost is very expensive. And then, next plan to construct other pipelines should be blocked by local residents or several environmentalists. For instants, now there is plan to build new oil pipeline. However, they examine sufficiently comparing with previous projects and this and then, they could find problems so, they can oppose building these projects against. In addition, to solve problem about leaking pipeline we should change old equipment to new one. It could be help to reduce leaking oil.
Moreover, it is difficult to solve the environmental problems only by the one country that suffered from pollution. Environmental problems are not what only one have and if only one country makes the effort to find the solution, they cannot solve it. For example, Russia government protected Lake Baikal from own pollutants but near country such as China or Kazakhstan discharged pollutants to Lake Baikal. Do you think what will happen matters? Even though Russia Authority perseveres in their efforts, Lake Baikal might be polluted. When every nation should cooperate together, our environment can maintain permanently for our descendant. Therefore, NGO, UN, and EU should held a conference for discussing this problem so, they should try to find a solution to a problem.
Finally, the Russian authority should campaign and make education program for Lake Baikal°Ø preservation. Many Russian and industrial companies do not know how important the environment is in their life and Lake Baikal is valuable. According to Sinitsyna, the nation lack of water is increasing more and more now. They are suffering from the shortage of water and have many problems depending on it. Someday we may pay expensive cost about using water like the petroleum. Now, using the water is free but if we reach serious condition of lack of water, we might discharge far more expensive cost than paying in order to we protect water. Therefore, Russia authority should inform the problems and warning and education program and campaign might help what they do to save Lake Baikal which is a resource of fresh water.

Consequently, Lake Baikal is very beautiful place and one of the valuable resources remaining on the earth. Therefore, we have a duty to protect it and should make endeavor continuously. To protect Lake Baikal every nation should work together and a regulation of environment should be strong. In addition, as oil pipeline°Ø route change other place where pollution could reduce, we should protect Lake Baikal. Finally, education programs and campaign might be good way for Lake Baikal°Ø future. Lake Baikal is not owned by only Russia. It is treasure that everybody should protect. I wish Lake Baikal get back former appearance as soon as possible.

proposal

I became interested in the endangered lake Baikal in Russia after reading several articles and a book about it. Lake Baikal is the biggest lake in the world and major resource to supply drinking water for Russian. In addition, about 80 percent of organism exist only in Lake Baikal. (J, Li, 2004) According to Dobbs (1993), the problem is that Lake Baikal is getting polluted. There are several reasons for this. According to J. Li (2004), Russian industry discharge lots of toxic waste. That is related to the economic profit of companies because if they do not install filters that can refine pollutants, they could save money. Another reason is no change old equipments. Finally, pipeline carrying oil from Russia to China has been leaking in Lake Baikal.
I plan on writing that three things should be done about protection Lake Baikal in Russia. First, authority in Russia should change old equipment for new and technological it. Second, environmental regulation should be tight. That is, Russia government should give penalty from dump and discharging pollutions of oil and regulation of the oil pipeline. Finally, all countries should make effort together to solve this problem. Environmental problem is could not solve as Russia make efforts alone.
I have found a variety of articles, a book and website that give background information and solutions. I should find more articles and websites because I still need a lot of information to support logically.

Lake Baikal in Russia- argument essay

There are a lot of problems about environmental protection of Lake Baikal in Russia. Lake Baikal is not only the biggest lake in the world, but also major resource to supply fresh water for Russian. However, now the Lake Baikal is threatened by a couple of industrial companies. They pollute Lake Baikal through pipeline carrying oil from Russia to China as well as discharge lots of toxic waste. In addition, according to Sinitsyna(2005), they construct giant dams crossing it. Environmentalists argue that each action could have a bad influence upon it. Especially, about 80 percent of organisms exist only in Lake Baikal. These problems could let exterminate a stock. I agree with environmentalist opinion because of right of Russian to drink fresh water, killing rare variety, and pretty expense to recover it from polluted Lake Baikal.
To begin with, Russian need to fresh water. According to J, Li (2004), Lake Baikal is one of the purity lakes, which there are few lake that dose not be polluted in the world. Russians have a right to drink and use fresh water. Industrial companies could not interfere with this right for their profits.
Secondly, industrial waste would kill a lot of animal or plants that live only in Lake Baikal. Industrial companies argue that these behaviors affect merely small part. However, in my opinion, affecting merely small part is also the behavior that destroy environment. If they now do not stop these behaviors, far bigger disaster might reach to them.
Finally, according to Sinitsyna (2005), industrial companies argue that they could give many profits to Russian as supplying job and stuff but they do not know that environmental destroy could give far bigger damage to Russian than profits through them. Once destroyed environment cost a great deal to recover it.
Consequently, I strongly believe that industrial companies should stop these behavior to block destroy of Lake Baikal. They do not have right that Russian could not use fresh water. Moreover, their pollutant might kill a lot of rare variety, which are living in Lake Baikal. They also would pay a great deal cost about environment destroy. Therefore, more regulations should exist to protect Lake Baikal and Russian.

Beauty of Lake Baikal Threatened

In the article, “Beauty of Lake Baikal Threatened°∞, the Li, J insisted that lake Baikal is now endangered place and we should protect it. In addition, environmental protection is not one nation’ problem but now it is a time of international cooperation. Author introduced Mizukoshi’ opinion that he says plants and animals in the Lake Baikal area is facing the serious threat. In the article, Greenpeace Russia’s campaign director would like to send a powerful signal to gas, oil, and timber and pulp import-export companies to protect Lake Baikal. Moreover, Lake Baikal has not only variety species, but also about 80 percent of them exist only in Lake Baikal. According to article, the major cause of pollution is pipeline carrying oil from Russia to China, a great number of paper mills producing paper fibers, and wastewater of industrial and domestic. Mizukoshi point out this problems cannot solve alone so all countries should make effort together. I agree with these opinions that to protect Lake Baikal all of countries should cooperate together and Russia government and Greenpeace should enforce the regulation about environment.
It is difficult to solve the environmental problems only by the country that suffered from pollution. Environmental problems are not what only one have and if only one country make effort to find solution, they cannot solve it. For example, Russia government protected Lake Baikal from own pollutants but near country such as China or Eastern Europe discharged pollutants to Lake Baikal. Do you think what will happen matter? Even though Russia Authority perseveres in their efforts, Lake Baikal might be polluted. When every nation should cooperate together, our environment can maintain permanently for our descendant.
Furthermore, environmental regulation should be tight from dump and discharging pollutants of oil, gas, timber and pulp companies. The major reason of pollution of Lake Baikal is caused by their unconscientious behavior. They are effluent pollutants for their economic profit. Greenpeace and Russia state are defend them and should rise up penalty about pollution that dirtied Lake Baikal in order to recovery it.
Consequently, Lake Baikal is very beautiful place and one of the valuable resources remaining on the earth. Therefore, we have a duty to protect it and should make endeavor continuously. For protect Lake Baikal every nation should work together and regulation of environment should be strong. I wish Lake Baikal get back former appearance as soon as possible.

Russia Looks to Baltic Neighbours over Oil Spill

In the article,” Problems Harass Water-Rich Russia,” from the Ria Novosti, the author introduces water problems causing in Russia and surrounding regions. Lake Baikal is the biggest lake in the world and contains 20 percent of water resources of the world. (Sinitsyna, 2005, para1). Ms. Sinitsyna points out that Russians have been using plenty of drinking water by lake Baikal and other rivers. So they tend to waste water. The author also states that the regions like Moscow use an unlimited supply but some regions such as the Kalmykia-autonomy and the Littoral Territory experience suffering from lack of water. And the author presents possibility of the world facing shortage of water. I agree with those who believe that Russians waste water and they should protect the lake Baikal and other rivers because it is very important resources to us and we might pay more expensive cost due to lack of water later.
To begin with, water is one of the most important resources so we have a duty to protect it. If it were not for water, we cannot alive any more. For instance, someone who lives in desert has a lot of petroleum and gems but dose not have any water. He cannot definitely survive without water. Water is necessary resource to us to live life. Therefore, even though Russians have lots of clear water, about one five water of world, they should not waste water. The more clear water they have, the more preserve they should.
Moreover, the nations of lack of water are increasing more and more now. They are suffering from shortage of water and have many problems depend on it. Someday we may pay expensive cost about using water like the petroleum. Now using the water is free but if we reach serious condition of lack of water, we might discharge far more expensive cost than paying in order to we protect water.
Consequently, I believe Russians should protect lake Baikal and other rivers and should not waste water. We could hardly live without water and water might pay expensive cost when we would use it unless preserve water. It is no use crying over spilt milk. Therefore, they do not know how it is important resource to them right now because they have plenty of clear water but as time goes by they would know its value and feel keenly their foolish act.

The sleeping beauty

'The sleeping beauty is a traditional tale that presents a very harmful sterotype for girls. The story is about a beautiful princess who sleeping by the wicky fairy spell. The king and the queen open the party for princess birth and invite fairies except the wicked fairy. So, the wicked fairy made a bad wish for revenge. The princess was sleeping for 100 years because of the spell. After 100 years passed, prince who had passed the castle kissed the princess and broken the spell. And, she got married the prince.

the princess is very beautiful, kindness, and curious. That was why everyone loved her, and she was married to the handsome prince. Fairies who were invited to a party are very kind. Otherwise, fairy who was not invite to a party is more wicked and powerful than other fairies. Prince is handsome and brave. Therefore, he rescued the princess from a spell of the wicked fairy. characteristics of this story have the traditional role. Then, I get a feeling that this story is harmful young girls. First, this princess is very beautiful, but she is edpendent upon the prince. Young girls might learn that beauty is more important than independent and brave. Second, the prince is a hansome. However, if this prince is very ugly, can she determine to get married with the prince? What if the princess was very ugly, Would he kiss to the princess? Third, a marriage is the reality of life. This story showed that the prince and the princess will be happy. Nevertheless, the princess had lived before 100 years. Then, actually, the princess age is a 100 older than the prince. As a matter of course, her face is still young. 100 times can change everything, like value, fashion, and so forth. Are you sure that are happy and overcome all differences? I think that it is very difficult to overcome their differences, and then be happy. However, this story tells us that it is just easy. As a result, I believe that this story is harmful for young girls because it makes distant from the reality of life.

Golden ax and silver ax

Once upon a time there lived a good woodcutter. He was a man who cared for his parents with all his heart. But he was poor. He used to go to the forest to cut down trees.
One day while he was searching for a tree to cut down, he decided to cut down a tree that was near a pond. While he was cutting down the tree, his old ax fell into the pond by mistake. He said to himself, “Oh, my God! If I don’t have my ax, I can’t cut down trees and then I will not be able to earn any money. How will I take care of my parents?” He was crying because he was sad.
At the time, the god of the mountains appeared.from the pond and asked, “Why are you sad?”
“I’m a woodcutter, and when I was cutting down the tree, my ax fell into the pond. If I don’t have my ax, I won’t be able to earn any money,” he answered.
“I’m willing to bring you your ax,” said the god of the mountains. The god of the mountains disappeared. The god soon appeared with a gold ax. He asked, “Is this gold ax yours?” “No, it isn’t,” he answered. The god disappeared again. He came back with a silver ax. He asked, “Is this silver ax yours?” The woodcutter answered, “No, it isn’t.” He asked, “Then is this old metal ax yours?” The woodcutter answered, “Yes, it’s mine.”
The god of the mountains said with a smile, “You are very honest. I will give you all three axes as a reward.” The god gave him all three axes. The woodcutter and his parents lived happily ever after.
