Research Paper - Lake Baikal in Russia
I became interested in the endangered lake Baikal in Russia after reading several articles and a book about it. Lake Baikal is located in the south of Siberia, near the Russian- Mongolian border. Lake Baikal is the biggest lake in the world and major resource to supply drinking water for Russia. In his book entitled °∞Lake Baikal Inspires Russian Clean-up Effort°±, Dobbs states that °∞Baikal is probably 25 million years old with sediments move than three miles deep°± (Dobbs, 1993, p31). In addition, about 80 percent of organism, 2,000 different plants and animals, exists only in Lake Baikal. According to Dobbs (1993), the problem is that Lake Baikal is getting polluted. A lot of plant and marine has suffered by effects of pollution. There are several reasons for this. Russian industry discharge lots of toxic waste. That is related to the economic profit of companies because if they do not install filters that can refine pollutants, they could save money. Another reason is that pipelines carrying oil from Russia to China and pipelines carrying the industrial waste have been leaking in Lake Baikal. Finally, lake Baikal is in serious trouble in Russia, and four things, strict laws, changing oil pipeline°Ø route, corporation with other countries, education programs and campaign, should be done to protect the lake Baikal in Russia.
One of the greatest reasons for pollution of Lake Baikal is that a lot of factories have discharged toxic waste. Especially, according to TES case studies, the paper and pulp mills that their business has began since 1954 have polluted the surrounding region. They produce bleached cellulose that is used in clothing manufacture. (TES case studies) This chemicals could threat the lake Baikal and kill many organisms that live in the there. However, these paper and pulp mills contribute to the local economy and employment. About 2,000 employees work at these factories so it is problem to connecting with dwellers°Ø life (TES case studies). In addition, air pollution surrounding Baikal is very serious. The larch and pine forests in the areas also show degradation effects from the pollution as DDT levels are getting high. Populations in the area are raising. As a result, more many industrial factories are getting build in there. So many industrial factories discharged pollutants (TES case studies).
The second reason is about a oil pipeline. Local NGOs and independent experts insist that it could be a threat to the local community and the ecosystem of Lake Baikal as oil and waste leak due to old equiopment(Shapkhaev, 2005). Furthermore, there are other plans to build this project in the area. °∞Just one significant accident would be enough to disturb the ecological balance in all of Lake Baikal (Shapkhaev, 2005).
To solve these problems, at first environmental regulation should be tight. That is, Russia government should give penalty from dump and discharging pollutions of oil. A great number of paper mills produce paper fibers, and wastewater of industrial and domestic. The major reason for pollution of Lake Baikal is caused by Russian°Øs unconscientious behavior. Paper mills also discharged for their economic profit. Greenpeace and Russia state should defend their behavior and should raise up a penalty about pollution that dirtied Lake Baikal in order to recovery it.
Second, the oil pipeline should be changed the route. As oil pipeline pass the Lake Baikal, some oil is leaking because of old equipment. Leaking oil and waste could pollute Lake Baikal and organisms that live in there. This problem is very serious and dangerous. It is best to change route of the pipeline but changing it is difficult because it is already lies and cost is very expensive. And then, next plan to construct other pipelines should be blocked by local residents or several environmentalists. For instants, now there is plan to build new oil pipeline. However, they examine sufficiently comparing with previous projects and this and then, they could find problems so, they can oppose building these projects against. In addition, to solve problem about leaking pipeline we should change old equipment to new one. It could be help to reduce leaking oil.
Moreover, it is difficult to solve the environmental problems only by the one country that suffered from pollution. Environmental problems are not what only one have and if only one country makes the effort to find the solution, they cannot solve it. For example, Russia government protected Lake Baikal from own pollutants but near country such as China or Kazakhstan discharged pollutants to Lake Baikal. Do you think what will happen matters? Even though Russia Authority perseveres in their efforts, Lake Baikal might be polluted. When every nation should cooperate together, our environment can maintain permanently for our descendant. Therefore, NGO, UN, and EU should held a conference for discussing this problem so, they should try to find a solution to a problem.
Finally, the Russian authority should campaign and make education program for Lake Baikal°Ø preservation. Many Russian and industrial companies do not know how important the environment is in their life and Lake Baikal is valuable. According to Sinitsyna, the nation lack of water is increasing more and more now. They are suffering from the shortage of water and have many problems depending on it. Someday we may pay expensive cost about using water like the petroleum. Now, using the water is free but if we reach serious condition of lack of water, we might discharge far more expensive cost than paying in order to we protect water. Therefore, Russia authority should inform the problems and warning and education program and campaign might help what they do to save Lake Baikal which is a resource of fresh water.
Consequently, Lake Baikal is very beautiful place and one of the valuable resources remaining on the earth. Therefore, we have a duty to protect it and should make endeavor continuously. To protect Lake Baikal every nation should work together and a regulation of environment should be strong. In addition, as oil pipeline°Ø route change other place where pollution could reduce, we should protect Lake Baikal. Finally, education programs and campaign might be good way for Lake Baikal°Ø future. Lake Baikal is not owned by only Russia. It is treasure that everybody should protect. I wish Lake Baikal get back former appearance as soon as possible.
